Information Technology in Pharma and Healthcare

With the Ovum forecast predicting that spending on healthcare IT in the UK will top $5 billion in 2016, Pharma technology is an area where we are likely to see huge investment in the coming years. People in the UK are living longer than ever, meaning more people are demanding medical care for long-term, often chronic illnesses. With the ever increasing need to reduce costs across the healthcare sector, money saving technology solutions seem to be the best answer.

This drive towards technology is mostly because of the “National Programme for IT in the NHS”, a government scheme providing a multi-billion pound investment to move towards IT solutions. As the NHS refuses to compromise on quality, the only way to move towards a solution to the soaring costs and demand for longer term care is to embrace virtualisation.

In Europe as a whole, the Ovum report predicted most growth in teleheath, where services such as condition monitoring are delivered through telecommunications technology. They also believed Health Information Exchanges would grow in popularity annually by 13.2 per cent over the next few years. The UK in fact seems to be investing heavily into electronic health records and digital imaging solutions, and the increasingly in-demand picture archiving system.

A reliable and easily updated health record system would dramatically cut costs by increasing efficiency of hospitals and surgeries, as they would each have access to a patient’s full history. This would avoid unnecessary double testing of patients for certain diseases and allows easier analysis of illness history. In addition, emerging technology can be utilised, for example encouraging patients to download and use health monitoring apps for their smart phones and computers. This would not only enable patients to monitor their own conditions, but hopefully provide tools to stop people becoming unwell in the first place.

Although it is understood that only younger generations will benefit from these technology innovations at first, the ever increasing popularity of this type of technology shows just how effective these applications could be.
