The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has estimated that the United States could save $25 billion from the use of biosimilars over 10 years. In a general sense the term biosimilars refers to follow on biologics or follow on proteins that meet and or satisfy the very high standards often associated with comparability, i.e. safety, efficacy, purity, and potency already established by the approved originator biologic product. Social media and the internet are increasingly been used as a means to sell illegal and counterfeit drugs, a UN drugs agency has warned. This comes in the wake of a recent industry alarm when fake batches of the cancer drug Avastin came onto the US market increasing fears about drug safety. A recent report by MarkMonitor estimated that online counterfeit sales cost businesses $135 billion (£87 billion) in revenue in 2011. Read more

Cases of counterfeit pharmaceuticals being discovered entering the United States are on the up. Up 200 percent to $11 million (£7 million) in 2011 to be precise, based on the domestic value of seizures from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) last year. Read more

In its results for the first fiscal quarter of 2012, Dr Reddy's revealed a 69 percent year-on-year increase in revenues from its biosimilars portfolio in India, with the segment now representing 7 percent of overall sales. Japan's pharmaceutical market is the second largest in the world but has long suffered from the so-called drug lag. Lengthy approval processes for drugs have seen medicines readily available in the rest of the world take months, if not years, longer to hit the Japanese market and this has no doubt hampered its development.
