Sustainability is rapidly becoming a core design principle in clinical research but without data, it’s impossible to manage what we cannot measure. In this session, Jason LaRoche, Director, Innovation Health at Johnson & Johnson will share how sustainability has been embedded directly into the design of clinical trials through the development of a predictive environmental impact modeling tool.
This innovative sustainability calculator enables study teams to estimate the environmental footprint of a clinical trial based on real design parameters, from drug product manufacturing and logistics to lab kits, transportation, and trial operations. The tool has now been integrated into J&J’s internal trial design systems and is being adopted by multiple industry peers to create consistent benchmarking and data-driven decision-making across the sector.
Crucially, this sustainability modeling tool is open access and free for anyone to use, hosted by the Sustainable Healthcare Coalition. Any organisation can input their trial designs and begin measuring environmental impact immediately. This session will highlight how measurement enables:
t Smarter, leaner trial design t Reduced waste in clinical trial supplies t Data-driven sustainability governance t Industry benchmarking and collaboration
t Practical pathways to greener clinical trial supply chains
As the industry moves toward faster, smarter, and greener clinical trials, this session offers a framework for making sustainability measurable, actionable, and operational…not just aspirational.
