In the context of research involving biobanks, informed consent fails in the two most salient dimensions: in its usual format, informed consent both inhibits important research and yet also fails to protect research participants in some important ways. Given these failures, new ways of protecting research participants are needed. In this podcast, Kieran O’Doherty, Assistant Professor at the University of Guelph, discusses current failures and new models of consent.
