Destroyed research samples. Compromised lab methodologies. Failed equipment that invalidates samples. All of these scenarios represent a scientist’s equipment-failure nightmare. This nightmare became real in recent history when nearly 25 percent of the autism-related brain samples available for research were severely damaged because of freezer failure at McLean Hospital’s Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center. Years of research were compromised, and plans destroyed.
