Soren Skovlund, Director of Patient Research, Advocacy and Support at NovoNordisk, joins Helen Winsor from Pharma IQ, to discuss best practice approaches to patient education and self management.
Firstly, Skovlund talks about how NovoNordisk approaches the issue of patient education and who the key partners are in developing and delivering effective self management programmes in terms of assessment of self-management capacity, collaborative problem identification with patients and patient groups, integrated care planning and motivational techniques. Expanding on this, Skovlund discusses how patient education and self management programmes can deal with patient specific challenges to help deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation. Next, he looks at how we can gauge the effectiveness of patient education programmes and how NovoNordisk is trying to overcome these difficulties. Finally, he talks about the challenges in implementing self management techniques and the factors which influence patients’ ability to manage their disease.
